Kathmandu: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has emphasized the urgent need to address the evolving challenges to national security by acknowledging new dimensions beyond traditional threats. Speaking at a program organized at Singhadurbar on Tuesday to mark the 24th anniversary of the National Security Council Secretariat, PM Oli highlighted the increasing complexity of modern security concerns.
He noted that issues such as cybercrime stemming from the misuse of information and communication technology, trans-border crimes, climate change, drug trafficking, and the harmful use of social networking sites are rapidly becoming serious threats to national security. While traditional security concerns remain, the Prime Minister stressed that these modern challenges demand timely assessment, analysis, and strategic planning.
PM Oli underscored that regional and international security trends are changing swiftly, making it crucial for Nepal to formulate strategies that address their potential impacts. He called on all stakeholders, including political parties, government bodies, and citizens, to work in close coordination to protect and strengthen the country’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national unity.
The Prime Minister also reiterated the concept of a "whole-of-the-nation" approach in safeguarding national security. According to Article 266 (1) of the constitution, a National Security Council, chaired by the Prime Minister, is tasked with formulating policies concerning Nepal's overall national interest, security, and defense, and making recommendations to the government and the Council of Ministers.
